Johannes Evangelista Purkinje (1787-1869), Czech physiologist. Also known as Jan Evangelista Purkyne, he is famous for his 1837 discovery of what came to be called Purkinje cells. These are a type of neuron (nerve cell) found in the brain structure called the cerebellum. The Purkinje fibres of the heart, which he discovered in 1839, are also named after him. This lithograph is based on an artwork by the artist Rudolf Hoffmann (who was active from 1840-1860). The lithograph has been dated to 1856.
