TEM image, depicting numerous Lassa virus virions. Many of the virions can be seen outside the confines of the host cell, but some have broken away

Produced by the US Center for Disease Control (DC), this digitally colorized transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image, depicts numerous Lassa virus virions in an unknown tissue culture sample. Many of the virions can be seen outside the confines of the host cell, but some were in the process of budding free of a host cell membrane (arrowheads), after having undergone replication within the cell cytoplasm. An optimised and enhanced version of an image produced by the US Viral Pathology Branch, Bureau of Laboratories, CDC.
