Infected wasp sting on hand. Swollen hand of a five year old girl, due to a wasp sting that has become infected. The base of the thumb is red and inflamed, and the palm is infected (white lumps). Wasp stings contain a venom that causes pain, red- ness and swelling for up to 48 hours. The sting may, as here, become infected due to poor hygiene, or by scratching that may introduce bacteria into the wound. Treatment includes removing the sting if it is embedded, washing the wound, applying a hydrocortisone cream to reduce swelling, and treating the infection. Painkiller drugs may be required.
