When the valve is closed thesesurfaces accurately fit similar ones on theseat, and when lifted, as shown in fig. 78, two annular openings are formed at the same time, thus giving adouble passage to the steam through the valve. The spindle (b) of the valve (c) is fixed to a centre eye, cast in onewith the valve piece, and connected to it by four arms, a a being two, theothers being at right angles to them.
