Chou En-Lai, the Premiere of the People’s Republic of China, welcoming western reporters Edmund Stevens and William Worthy in 1957. Stevens was the Time Magazine Moscow foreign correspondent, and was award the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of life under the Soviet system. William Worthy was a reporter for the Baltimore Afro-American and a civil rights activist. Together with photographer Phillip Harrington (who shot this photograph), the three journalists travelled to China in violation of a State Department ban on American reporters in Communist China. The reporters were welcomed by Premier Chou, while the State Department threatened them with revocation of passports and possibility incarceration.
