The story of Elaine – the subject of John Melhuish Strudwick’s 1891 painting – is told by Tennyson in the seventh book of Idylls of the King, ‘Lancelot and Elaine’. Elaine was the daughter of King Pelles, lord of Astolat. Some time before, Sir Lancelot, when travelling to a joust at Camelot, had come to the castle of Astolat and had been received by Pelles and his two sons and daughter.
