Earl Kitchener, Secretary of State for War in the British cabinet, was drowned off the Orkney Islands at on June 6th when the cruiser Hampshire foundered after being torpedoed or through striking a mine. Kitchener wasa senior British army officer and colonial administrator, especially his policies in the Boer Wars. During World War I, he served as Secretary of the State for War, a Cabinet Minister post.
