Birdwing butterfly research. Specimen of Queen Alexandra's birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) being studied under a microscope at a museum. Previously known as Troides alexandrae, this rare butterfly from eastern Papua New Guinea is the largest butterfly in the world. Its wingspan can exceed 25 centimetres. This study, by CNRS researcher Serge Berthier, is being carried out at the French National Museum of Natural History (Museum national d'histoire naturelle, MNHN) in Paris, France. The micrograph display on the screen shows the iridescent scales of the butterfly's wings. Photographed in 2008.
