The 1917 caption reads: “She spoke of what she did not understand – Her mistaken airs of gentility. [from story Simple Susan]” Simple Susan was written by Maria Edgeworth (died 1849), a prolific Anglo-Irish novelist of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe, and Louey Chisholm, a prolific children’s book writer.
