2023 Perseids Meteor flying over Antelope Lake in Plumas County California and casting a reflection along with the Milky Way.

The Perseid meteor shower which happens each August is probably the best meteor shower of summer. The spectacle happens when Earth’s orbit travels through the debris field left in the wake of the comet Swift-Tuttle. It has it’s radiant point roughly in line with the constellation Perseus, hence its name. The shower can generally be observed for several days consecutively and doesn’t have the very brief “peak” of some of the other showers. The 2023 Perseid shower had great potential for viewing since there was little to no moon in the sky to interfere with the visibility of the meteors. I went to Antelope Lake in Plumas County California to observe and try to photograph it on an evening near the peak. After some cloud cover made for a nice sunset it made for a bit of a challenge to see meteors in the early evening. However I did capture this really bright one shooting across the sky alongside the galactic core of the Milky Way and burning brightly enough to show a reflection on the water along with the stars and broken clouds.
