Abstract pre-Columbian rock painting. The pre-Columbian era refers to all civilisations in the Americas prior to the conquests or declines that followed contact being made between the New World and the Old World in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many of these civilisations were preliterate, lacking a written language, and some of the only surviving records are rock paintings (pictographs) or engravings (petroglyphs). Some are tens of thousands of years old, while others are only a few hundred years old. Materials used included charcoal and mineral pigments, depicting a range of objects.
