Vintage photo of Edward Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VIII) in military uniform arriving for a visit at the American Red Cross in Washington DC in 1919. Edward (1894 - 1972) served in World War One with the Grenadier Guards although his status meant he was unable to fight on the front line. He became King of the United Kingdom on January 20 1936 but soon sparked a constitutional crisis by proposing marriage to American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Her status as a divorcee meant she was deemed unsuitable to become Queen and as a result Edward abdicated the throne on December 11 1936 - meaning his reign lasted just 325 days. He was subsequently made Duke of Windsor and served as Governor of the Bahamas from 1940 to 1945 before effectively entering retirement and spending most of his later life living abroad.
