A huge strangler fig or banyan tree (Ficus aurea of the Mulberry Family) on Cuale River Island in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The strangler fig is in the family Moraceae, native from Florida south to Panama, including the Caribbean. They germinate in crevices atop other trees, sending aeriform roots to the ground, enveloping the host tree then growing upward to reach into the sunlight. Individual trees may reach 30m (100 ft) in height.
