Blueprint reading; a practical manual of instruction in blueprint reading through the analysis of typical plates with reference to mechanical drawing conventions and methods, the laws of projection, etc . ection of the spherical surface anda plane which does not pass through the center, Fig. 84. CONIC SECTIONS If a plane intersects a cone at various angles with the base thegeometrical figures thus formed are called conic sections. A planeperpendicular to the base passing through the vertex of a rightcircular cone forms an isosceles triangle. If the plane is parallelto the base, the intersection of the plane and the conical surfaceswill be the circumference of a circle. Ellipse. If a plane AB, Fig. 85a,cuts a cone oblique to the axis of thecone, but not cutting the base, the curveformed is called an ellipse, as shown inFig. 85b, this view being taken per-pendicular to the plane AB. If theplane cuts a cylinder as shown in , the ellipse shown in Fig. 85d isthe result, this view being also taken perpendicular to the planeAB. An ellipse may be defined as a curve generated by a point ^ ^~\ (,^ % X \ MnjOR I JIXIS J Fig. 86. Diagram Showing Constantaof Ellipse 117 52 MECHANICAL DRAWING. Fig. 87.
