Dahlia Moonfire, bicoloured flower mutation, probably caused by cold spring. 1st flower of the season had unexpected puple colouring on 3 petals.

Dahlia 'Moonfire'. Bicoloured flower mutation, probably caused by cold spring. The normal flower colour is the orange/red combination, but this first flower of the season was bicoloured with an unusual pink. As the summer went on the rest of the flowers on the plant came true to variety. Changes in the genetic code can occur randomly in flowering plants (Dahlias are particularly prone) and can happen when natural mistakes are made during cell division and replication, provoked by exposure to certain chemicals, or because of weather fluctuations such as extreme cold or heat.
