Jade Green Cicada (Dundubia vaginata). Close-up of freshly emerged imago grasping the head of the exuvia with its front 4 legs. Malaysia.

One of a series of images documenting the emergence of an adult Jade Green Cicada at night in the tropical rainforest of Malaysia. Periodical cicadas emerge as nymphs all together after long periods of time underground. Nymphs climb the nearest available tree, and begin to shed their larval skin. Once extricated from their larval cuticle, their wings will expand with body fluids and their adult skin will harden. When their wings and body are ready, they can start their short adult life.
