Springtail bristle, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This arthropod is well-adapted to cold conditions, and dies if the temperature exceeds 12 degrees Celsius. The ideal temperatures is between minus 4 and plus 5 degrees Celsius. Adaptations include sheltering in rock cavities, and synthesising a form of antifreeze to prevent the formation of ice crystals in their cells. Springtails are so-named because they can jump large distances using their tail. Magnification: x3300 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
