Solar magnetic field reversal. computer artwork showing how changes in the Sun's activity produces sunspots (black), which in turn result in the reversal of the magnetic field (red lines). Sunspots can exist from a few days to a few months, but they eventually decay and release magnetic flux in the solar photosphere. This magnetic field is dispersed and churned by turbulent convection, and solar large-scale flows. This mechanism leads to the accumulation of the magnetised decay products at high solar latitudes, eventually reversing the polarity of the polar fields.
