An adult male Wester Purple martin stands on a cedar nest-box at a Vancouver Island marina with a dragonfly in its beak (sailboat mast in background).

Due to loss of natural habitat, Western purple martin numbers have declined dramatically in British Columbia. The nest box is part of the recovery effort being carried out by volunteers in a number of communities around the coast of southwestern BC.
