Cockle fishing boat at Leigh-on Sea, Essex
Leigh-on-Sea next to Southend on the Thames estuary has a lucrative summer cockle fishery, the core of which is worked by 14 licenced boats using suction dredges on the mud and sand banks in the adjacent part of the estuary. These boats are tied up for the winter. Other boats work a wider area in the estuary.
