The blue-cheeked butterflyfish (Chaetodon semilarvatus: 12 cms.) is found on coral reefs in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It is bright yellow with dark vertical line on the body and a dark blue patch around each eye. This is one of the few species of fish which mate for life; there have been claims that when one dies, the remaining one will die shortly afterwards. They are normally found in pairs, though when young - prior to selecting a mate - they can sometimes be seen in substantial aggregations of up to twenty individuals. They eat coral polyps and small invertebrates. Egyptian Red Sea
