Avebury, Wiltshire: two massive stones of the Great Circle at the SE entrance to the henge monument, Stone 1 (R) is known as the Devil's Chair.
Two massive stones (98 and 1) of the Great Circle at the SE entrance to the Avebury henge monument. Stone I (R) is known as the Devil's Chair, to its rear is part of the bank and ditch of the earthwork circle (henge). Originally built in the late Neolithic, many of the stones were toppled and smashed in Christian times. In the 1930s Alexander Keiiler was able to locate the stone holes cut in the underlying chalk and mark them with concrete posts or re-erected sarsen stones.
