Amazing natural formations that are created by water dripping underground in limestone caves can be seen close-up at Florida Caverns State Park near Marianna in the panhandle of Florida, USA. Overhead in this cave are stalactites that very slowly drip down to form straw-like shapes or wide rippled designs resembling draperies (on right). The continuous dripping also creates cone-shaped stalagmites on the cave floor that are larger in size. Both types of formations are composed of calcite, a mineral leached from the limestone by rainwater seeping through the ground for many thousands of years.
