Termites (Nasutitermes corniger). Worker termites (larger) feeding on decaying wood while being guarded by soldier termites (smaller, pointed heads). Termites are social insects that live in large colonies which, at maturity, can contain from several hundred to several million individuals. A typical colony contains nymphs (semi-mature young), workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals of both genders, sometimes containing several egg-laying queens. Photographed in the Amazon rainforest at the Tiputini Biodiversity Research Station, Ecuador.
