Carbon-carbon composite stress test. Scale bar in centimetres above strain gauge and thermocouple instrumentation attached to a carbon-carbon composite sample (coupon) following a stress test. Carbon-carbon is a composite material that consists of carbon fibres in a matrix of graphite. It is used in high-temperature applications, such as for the thermal tiles on NASA's Space Shuttles. Photographed at NASA's Lewis Research Center, Ohio, USA (now known as the Glenn Research Center, GRC). This GRC image dates from 6 February 1998.
