A pair of coleman shrimps, Periclimenes colemani, sitting on their host sea urchin, Asthenosoma varium.


It is little known about this species. The Coleman shrimp, Periclimenes colemani, lives between the poisonous spines of the sea urchin, Asthenosoma varium. This species of shrimps is usually found in pairs, whereby the bigger one is the female. The male’s life purpose is to fertilize the eggs. The maximum known size is about 2cm. Periclimenes colemani can be found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. It was first recorded and described in 1975 and is not assessed by the IUCN list of threatened species.
