Magnesian limestone sea stack on Blast Beach near Seaham in County Durham

On County Durham's Heritage Coast Liddle sea stack on Blast Beach near name Blast may come from the fact that in the past clinker waste was dumped on the beach from an iron works that once existed locally. Ships also emptied their ballast here before taking on their cargoes of iron and coal at Seaham Harbour. The dark sand derives from the local coal that was mined nearby for many years.
