Case Study House #21, Wonderland Avenue, Hollywood Hill, LA, living room interior. Architect: Pierre Koenig

Size of site is 110 by 160 feet. Area of house is 1320 square feet, one storey; 4 rooms: living room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. Materials are steel frame and steel decking. The north and south walls of the house are glazed with solid east and west walls. A central core divides the living area from the bedrooms thereby disengaging the bathrooms from the exterior walls. This enables the curtain walls to be simplified. By completely surrounding the house by pools, water becomes an integral element of the design. The pools are spanned by brick terraces that lead to the living areas providing an additional plane and texture between the water and the main structure. The house is constructed in a series of 10 x 22 foot bays, each nine foot high Originally built for Dr and Mrs Bailey in 1956.
