China: Ren Xiong (19 July 1823 - 23 November 1857). Hanging scroll self-portrait, c. 1850. Ren Xiong was a Chinese painter from Xiaoshan who was active during the late Qing dynasty. Ren belonged to the 'Shanghai school' in Chinese painting, and was famous for his bold and innovative style. He painted various subjects, but was known for his figures and Daoist stories. He was considered one of the 'Four Rens of Shanghai', and one of the 'Three Xiongs of Shanghai'.
