This is a Horse fly or Cleg-fly (Haematopota pluvialis) about 10mm long and dull grey . The females are bloodsuckers often leaving an infected bite on humans and livestock (strangely the males live on nectar and plant juices). It flies silently and is often called a 'horse fly'.
