Itwas the capital of theTlahuica nation,and after the conquest Cortes built asplendid palace, a church, and a con-vent of Franciscans, believing that hewas laying the foundation of a greatcity. The conquerors palace is nowthe government house. It is most picturesque, standing on a hill behind whichstarts up a great white volcano. There are some good houses and the remainsof the church which Cortes built, celebrated for its fine FLYING BUTTRESS, CUERNAVACA. MICHOACAN, MORELOS, GUERRERO 459 Morelos is a sugar cane State. Governor Pablo Escandon is interested indeveloping the agricultural and horticultural resources; he has in view an agri-cultural school and model farm where farmers may see the results of new methods.
