‘Sea Pinks’ or Thrift flowers at Chesil Beach in Dorset, Britain, UK

Ethan Snell (4) enjoying playing in one of the largest displays of easily accessible ‘Sea Pinks’ or ‘Thrift’ in the country. Nearly 5 acre free floral show of the wild pink flowers can be seen around May each year, at Chesil Beach in Dorset. Part of a coastal nature reserve the flowers often grow on steep cliffs and are then not generally safely accessed, but near Portland the eye catching display can be viewed up close and safely after a short walk from a nearby car park. Don Moxon Warden of The Fleet and Chesil Nature Reserve said “ There are nearly 5 acres of ‘Thrift’ and the whole area does turn pink for a few weeks every year, it is one of the best sights at this time of year. They must be one of the most accessible displays of ‘Sea Pinks’ as they grow mainly on coastal cliffs but here at Portland they have perfect growing conditions and do really well in our special coastal environment”. Families and visitors do like to picnic in this area and on a warm spring day it’s a perfect place to run around with your little sister by the seaside, just as Ava and Ethan from Weymouth were happy doing at the week-end! 13/05/2012 PICTURE BY: DORSET MEDIA SERVICE.
