Napoleon and Plague Victims

On March 7, 1799, Napoleon I, emperor of France, took control of Jaffa, an ancient port city on the Mediterranean and in present-day Israel. While many of the people of Jaffa were killed in the battle, an epidemic then hit the city and killed scores more. Napoleon went to visit a place where many of those afflicted with the disease had been sent. This 1804 painting by the French artist Baron Antoine Jean Gros shows Napoleon visiting the victims of the plague.
