The Rubicon is a river in northeast Italy. In 49 , Julius Caesar is said to have said "The die is cast!" as he crossed the Rubicon (pictured here in this 1900 illustration), for with that act he defied Pompey and the other leaders in Rome by crossing into Roman-controlled Italy with his legions and started a Civil War, which would end in 45 with him becoming ruler of the Roman World. With this war, the Roman Republic neared its last days before the establishment of the Roman Empire under Caesar's successor Augustus.
