The cuckoo pint or Lords and Ladies plant Arum maculatum showing the hooded leaf and purple spadix. Concealed in its base the spadix has a ring of hairs followed by the male flowers and then the female flowers. Insects attracted to its scent are initially trapped by the hairs and get covered in pollen from the male flowers. On escaping past the hairs they they then carry the pollen to pollinate other plants. The berries of the cuckoo pint that develop from the spadix are considered poisonous.
