Chloroplast. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fractured section through a black nightshade (Solanum nigrum) leaf showing a chloroplast (green), the site of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process that synthesises carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight. The carbohydrate may be stored in the chloroplast as starch granules (grey). Also seen within the chloroplast are plastoglobules (yellow), particles of lipoproteins. Magnification: x4000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
