Trachea, post-mortem. The trachea, or windpipe, is a tube that carries air to the lungs. Here, the trachea has been cut open to allow an examination of its interior. The bands (cream) are structural rings of cartilage that prevent the airway from collapsing. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs.
