Reverse osmosis trains

Reverse osmosis trains at The Irvine Desalter Project, Irvine Ranch Water District, Irvine, California, USA. Reverse osmosis trains are used to separate dissolved salt from water. A total of 434 reverse osmosis membrane elements are inside the 62 pressure vessels. Two pumps are used to pressurize water for the membrane separation process. The Irvine Desalter Project produces drinking (potable) water by purifying ground waters from the Orange County basin. Due to natural geology in the area groundwaters beneath Irvine have high salt concentration, so it is treated using reverse osmosis, decarbonation and disinfection. The facility supplies enough potable drinking water for about 50,000 people. Photo May 2008.
