Everybody in San Francisco and almost everyone in Cali-fornia knows John Swett, the present Superintendent of Schools,of San Francisco. Mr. Swetts popularity reaches over manyyears. As an educator, he has a wide and deserved prominence,and in his leisure hours he follows viticulture as a pleasure andincidentally as a means of profit. John Swett was born in Pittsfield. N. H., in ]S,30. He wasIducated for the occupation of teaching, and began his life workill New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He arrived in California in February, :j. and went at onceto the mines. .\.fter six mouths hard work in the gold diggingson Feather Kiver, he came to San Francisco, where, after a fewmonths waiting, he was appointed Principal of the Kincon School.
