Oregon, Ohio - A sign warns of blue-green algae in the water of Lake Erie at Maumee Bay State Park. Caused largely by phosphorus runoff from agricultural fertilizer, algal blooms have appeared in recent summers in western Lake Erie. Some contain cyanobacteria, which may produce harmful toxins, a threat to local drinking water supplies.
