Sarracenia is a genus of insect eating plant that belongs to the family of the Sarraceniaceae that are strictly native to North flava, popularly known as the yellow pitcher plant, has a range extending from southern Alabama, through Florida and Georgia, to the coastal plains of southern Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Populations also exist in the Piedmont and mountains of North Carolina. This carnivorous, herbaceous plant thrives best in moist, boggy soils and can reach a height from 40 to 100 cm. Its slender stem ends upward in a trumpet-shaped pitcher that dips to one side with the mouth being circled by an outward-rolled lip. This pitcher is the trap for catching prey, most usually ants and other insects. In spring it produces a large flower with thin yellow petals in five-fold symmetry.
