Hikers heading to resting hut and shrine at Mount Chokai in Akita Japan

Mount Chokai is an active volcano located at the border of Akita and Yamagata Prefectures. It is 2,236m high and is popularly known as the Dewa no Fuji, or the Akita Fuji, by Akita natives, for its symmetrical shape, somewhat like the real Mount Fuji. It is a very popular hiking spot for the locals especially during summer. The mountain is closed during winter and spring, but seasoned climbers can still be found hiking in the snow. Mount Chokai is regarded as one of the 100 famous landscapes of Japan. It is also included as one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan.
