Louis XVIII (1755 -1824) was known as the Comte Count of Provence until he was named king in 1795 by emigres from France.


Louis XVIII (1755 -1824) was the brother of King Louis XVI of France. He was known as the Comte (Count) of Provence until he was named king in 1795 by the emigres from France during the French Revolution. With the help of Tallyrand, he was placed on the throne in 1814, but was then forced to flee. He returned soon after but more turmoil followed.
