Te Porere, the Lower Redoubt, winter 2017. Te Porere Redoubt is located south of Tongariro on a high point above the headwaters of the Whanganui River. It was built by the Maori prophet and warrior Te KootI and in October 1869 a combined force of Armed Constabulary and allied Maori attacked Te Kooti's forces and captured the redoubt. Te Kooti was wounded but eluded capture and escaped, although 37 of his followers were killed. The earthworks of the redoubt are well preserved and easy to access.
