Clump of wholeleaf Indian paintbrush, also known as orange paintbrush (Castilleja integra).

Castilleja integra, or wholeleaf Indian paintbrush, is a perennial plant of the figwort family native to arid hills and plains of the western United States. The plant grows 6 to 16 inches tall, topped with orange to red floral spikes. When the roots reach the roots of other plants, they will often penetrate to obtain a portion of the nutrients of the other plant. They are also a host species for the Fulvia Checkerspot butterfly (Chlosyne fulvia).
