Defensive Ditches at Richborough Roman Fort, Kent, UK

Richborough Roman Fort was founded by the Romans when they landed in England in AD43. It developed into a major port, linked to Canterbury and London by Watling Street. Richborough is accepted as the landing site of the Roman invasion and this is evidenced by 1st Century ditches and fortifications on the site. It guarded the Wantsum Channel which separated the English mainland from the Isle of Thanet. During the third Century, the site was refortified owing to increased threat from Saxon and Frankish raiders. Construction of the fort began in AD277 and was completed in AD285. The fort covered 5 acres and was surrounded by massive walls. The site is now in the care of English Heritage.
