Asbestos fibres. Light micrograph of fibres of chrysotile asbestos. Asbestos insulation can degrade if exposed, releasing small fibres that can be inhaled deep into the lungs. As the body is unable to degrade the fibres, they cause lung damage due to asbestos (asbestosis) and lung cancers such as mesotheliomas. This is a type of asbestos that is called crysotile (white asbestos). This is part of research carried out by what is today the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Photographed in the 1970s.
