Low, sometimes 3 dm. high, spreading at base, some of the branches of 2 to 4 erect joints; joints obovate, 15 cm. long or more, fleshy, pale bluish green, glabrous, terete at base; areoles numerous, filled with dirty yellow glochids, usually without spines, sometimes quite spiny; flowers rose-colored; fruit dry, subglobose, with large areoles filled with glochids and sometimes bearing spines; seeds large, turgid, 7 cm. in diameter. Type locality: Caliente, in the Tehachapi Moun- tains, California. Distribution: Southern California.
