Ireland, County Offaly (Contae Uíbh Fhailí): remains of the ancient ecclesiastical site of Clonmacnoise, south of Athlone, in the center of the country. The site was founded in 544 by Saint Ciaran, known as one of the twelve apostles of Ireland. Located at the top of a hill overlooking a bog crossed by the Shannon River, this site was once exactly at the crossroads of Ireland where the North/South river communication axis crossed the East/West road.
