The Puritans were English and Welsh Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries that became a major political force in England and came to power as a result of the First English Civil War (1642–1646). Many were iconoclasts, a term that has come to be applied figuratively to any individual who challenges "cherished beliefs or venerated institutions on the grounds that they are erroneous or pernicious"a belief that reulted in the destruction of many religious icons and works of art in 17th Century England.
